On 5 March 2026, partners of the TRIO-VI project gathered at the Institut de la Vision (IdV) in Paris, with additional participants joining online, for a full-day consortium meeting focused on reviewing progress and aligning on the next phase of implementation.
The meeting was opened by Prof. Serge Picaud (IdV) and Prof. Maciej Wojtkowski (ICTER), who welcomed participants and set the tone for a strategic discussion on the development of the TRIO-VI Centre of Excellence in Translational Ophthalmology.
The consortium revisited the core objectives of the project. Discussions confirmed the project’s strong focus on developing a Virtual Eye Clinic to improve access to diagnostics, advancing retinal imaging and therapeutic technologies, and creating robotic systems to support ophthalmic interventions. Partners also emphasized the importance of strengthening clinical validation pathways and delivering high-quality education and training programmes, including international summer schools.
A key element of the meeting was the discussion on impact. The consortium agreed on the need to define clear and measurable indicators early in the project, covering clinical outcomes, technological innovation, educational results and broader societal benefits. The Virtual Clinic concept was highlighted as a particularly promising solution with the potential to address limited access to ophthalmic care, especially in Poland.
The meeting also provided a platform to explore new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the areas of robotic surgery, advanced injection technologies and AI-supported diagnostics. Partners discussed potential engagement with external technology providers and startups, and agreed on the creation of smaller thematic working groups to accelerate progress in key research and innovation areas.
Looking ahead, the consortium identified several priorities for the coming months, including further development of impact indicators, continued progress in research infrastructure and technology development, and preparation of upcoming educational activities. Maintaining strong coordination and communication across partners remains central to the project’s success.
The Paris meeting marked an important milestone for TRIO-VI, reinforcing the shared commitment of all partners to building a Centre of Excellence in translational ophthalmology at ICTER and delivering meaningful impact in eye health through innovation and collaboration.
